Obituary for Jonathan R. Benjamin

Jonathan Roy Benjamin passed from this life at the tragically young age of 37 on the morning of June 19th, 2019, after a long battle with alcohol addiction. He is remembered for his kind heart, generous spirit, and loving nature.

Jonathan was born on October 23rd, 1981 in Fremont, Nebraska to Kathy and Rick Benjamin. A year later, his sister, Victoria, was born and his parents divorced in 1985. Shortly after, his mother met and married Scott Mohr, with whom she had another son, Danny, in 1988. Scott and Kathy raised their 3 children together.

Jonathan’s family moved to Fort Collins, Colorado in the summer of 1991. His maternal grandmother lived with them and the two shared a close relationship. Jonathan spent most of his life in Fort Collins, completing a GED and discovering a career waiting tables. Jonathan was extremely talented at this profession because of his kindness and natural talent for relating to people. No matter where Jonathan worked, his customers and coworkers loved him dearly.

Jonathan was an avid music lover, especially punk rock, and attended an incredible number of concerts. He could always be found listening to music and relating to people and experiences through song lyrics. His favorite bands were Blink 182 and Green Day, and his favorite guitarist was Tom DeLonge from Blink 182. Jonathan loved Tom so much that he met him, got Tom’s initials written on his back, and turned them into his first tattoo! Jonathan also loved Halloween and all the festivities associated with it.

Jonathan loved his family and friends deeply. He had a special place in his heart for his nieces and nephews, and often enjoyed spending one-on-one quality time with them. He also traveled across the country extensively and met new friends wherever he went. After his father’s death in late-July of 2018, Jonathan moved to his hometown of Fremont and resided there until his death. Jonathan’s passing is a profound loss for his family, friends, and all that knew him. He will be missed deeply.

Jonathan was preceded in death by 5 grandparents and his father, Rick Benjamin. He is survived by his parents, Kathy and Scott Mohr of Fort Collins, CO; one sister, Victoria Benjamin (husband Cameo) of Wellington, CO; two brothers, Danny Mohr of Fort Collins and Jason McEntee (wife Shayla) of North Platte, NE; 6 nieces - Maya (12), Aria (10), Evie (6), of Wellington and Avery (19), Madi (10), and Eme (6) of North Platte; and 2 nephews - Rowan (8) of Wellington and Jaxon (9) of North Platte; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and concert buddies.

Jonathan’s family will be hosting a celebration of life on Tuesday, July 16th at 2:00 PM at Mishawaka Amphitheater, 13714 Poudre Canyon Highway, Bellvue, CO, 80512. In lieu of flowers, Jonathan’s family asks that you make a donation to The Lighthouse Sober Living House for Men in Fort Collins.
