Abbey Jane Ryerson, 80, of Fremont, Nebraska passed away 8:40 a.m. Saturday, February 28 in Arbor Manor Nursing home surrounded by her family. She was born November 13, 1928, in Columbus, Nebraska. Abbey Jane Whalley moved in 1931 with her parents, Harold and Velda Whalley and brother Donald to Fremont. She attended school in Fremont and graduated from Fremont High School in 1946. After graduating from Midland Lutheran College where she studied education and was a member of the renowned A'Capella Choir, she began her tenure with Fremont Public Schools in 1948 and taught upper elementary school and Kindergarten at North Side, Clarkson, Sheldon, Howard and Linden Schools, and retired in 1982. She married Rolland L. Ryerson on December 17, 1949, he preceded her in death on December 8, 2002. Abbey joined the First Congregational Church in 1946 and sang in church choir, taught Sunday school, Bible School music, served as a Deaconess, Trustee, and Women's Fellowship Circle 5 Treasurer. Abbey had a beautiful contralto voice and was soloist for many church services and funerals. She was a member of Chapter A.J. PEO since 1964 and a member of National Education Association and Fremont Retired Teachers' Association. Abbey is survived by son Greg Ryerson (wife Jacqueline) of Augsburg, Germany; daughter Sally Pflaum (husband Robert) of Decatur, Illinois; step son Timothy Ryerson (wife Crystal) of Prescott, Arizona; grandchildren Dominic and Nathalie Ryerson of Augsburg, Germany; Trent and Emily Pflaum of Decatur, Illinois; step grandchildren Scott Ryerson (wife Sylvia) of Singapore and Stacy Yeater (husband Mike) of Rock Island, Illinois. A Memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church UCC at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 3, 2009. Rev. Terri Akkermen and Rev. Nancy Jensen officiating. There will be no visitation.
