Ardes E. Oakeson Zakovec, age 90, of Fremont, passed away Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Nye Legacy in Fremont.
Ardes was born in Yutan, Nebraska, on August 6, 1926, to Carl and Agnes (Hansen) Oakeson.When she was 6 the family moved to Wahoo.She was confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in 1941.Ardes graduated from Wahoo High School in 1943, Luther College (Wahoo) in 1945, and Midland Lutheran College (Fremont) in 1947.She taught high school business in Sydney, Iowa; and Lyons and Scribner, Nebraska.
In 1950, Ardes married Dennis Zakovec.They made their home in Fremont and welcomed two daughters, Patricia Ann and Jan Elizabeth.In Fremont, Ardes taught 6th grade at Grant Elementary School and worked in the Fremont Junior High Library until her retirement in 1998.She was a member of the Fremont Retired School Personnel.Following her retirement, Ardes learned to speak Swedish and traveled to Sweden with members of her class.
Ardes gave her time to many school, civic, and church activities.She was a member of Sinai Lutheran Church for 67 years where she served in choir, bell choir, the library, and various committee and council positions.She was elected to the Board of Educational Service Unit #2 for 10 years, and served on the Alumni Board for Midland Lutheran College, where she was involved in raising scholarship money for the Luther College Heritage Fund.In 2006, Ardes received an Outstanding Alumni Award from Midland Lutheran College.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Donald Oakeson; and an infant sister.
Ardes is survived by her husband Dennis of Fremont; daughters and sons-in law Patty and Steve Carr of Fremont, and Jan and Chuck Sinclair of West Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren Natalie and Justin Zabrocki of Omaha, Hilary Carr of Omaha, Graham Carr of Fremont; Hannah Sinclair of Iowa City, Iowa; Rachel Sinclair of West Des Moines, Iowa; and great-granddaughter Hazel Anne Zabrocki of Omaha.

Visitation will be from 5:00 - 8:00 PM on Thursday, March 2, 2017, at Dugan Funeral Chapel.Family will be present from 5:00 - 7:00 PM.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 AM Friday, March 3, 2017, at Sinai Lutheran Church.Pastor Al Duminy will be officiating.
