Henry F. Missel, age 88, of Fremont, Nebraska, died Friday November 16, 2012, at Nye Legacy nursing home.

Henry was born July 26, 1924 in Maspeth, New York, to Henry August Missel and Barbara Daisy (Henny) Missel.

Henry grew up in Vineland, New Jersey, and after graduating from high school worked at Smith's Machine Shop until drafted for service in the US Army in 1943. He served in India, becoming a Sergeant, helping the Engineer Corps construct the Burma (Ledo) Road until the end of World War II. It was on the troop ship to India that he met his lifelong friend Tony Woods. They returned to the States and both entered college at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. In Kalamazoo, Henry and Tony became best friends with Robert Lawrence. The three have been the closest of friends ever since.

After college, Henry became a school teacher in Mount Clemens, Michigan. It was there that he was introduced to Nanette Sampter, whom he would marry in July 1953 in Fremont, Nebraska. They lived in Lorain, Ohio, where their first child, Hank, was born. Henry and Nanette moved to Dearborn, Michigan shortly thereafter, where Henry taught in the Dearborn Public schools until his retirement at age 58. Also in Dearborn were born two more sons; Robert and Fred. Henry was very active with his three sons as they grew up, attending many Boy Scout and Indian Guide outings.

After his retirement, Henry and Nanette spent many happy years traveling to visit their family, and attending Elder Hostels in many states. They had three wonderful trips to Europe with the group from the Henry Ford Community College. Henry was an elder in the Dearborn First Presbyterian Church, was active in the Kiwanis, and volunteered many hours as a tour guide and docent at the Henry Ford Estate, in Michigan. In June of 2006 Henry and Nanette moved to Fremont to be closer to family. They became members of The Presbyterian Church. Henry was also active in the Fremont Kiwanis.

Henry is survived by his wife, Nanette Missel, and three sons; Henry (wife Leslie) Missel of Snohomish, WA; Robert (wife Michele) Missel of Fremont; and Fred (wife Debbie) Missel of Tulsa, OK. Henry and Nanette have 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday November 26, 2012, at the Presbyterian Church in Fremont. Pastor Earl Underwood will be officiating.
