Jean M. Welstead, 86 Fremont Died at Edgewood Vista Tuesday July 7. She was born November 22, 1922 in Fremont to Edward and Irene Olson and graduated from Fremont High School in 1940. Interested in art, she started taking classes at Midland at the age of 11. She attended Midland Lutheran College, St. Mary's College in Omaha, Joslyn Art classes and others in pursuit of her love of Art. February 21, 1942 she married Marvin G. Welstead and on November 22, 1942 she joined Marvin at Stuttgart Army Airfield in Stuttgart, Arkansas where she worked as a stenographer and was eventually promoted to Post Rationing Officer. In December, 1945 she returned to Fremont where she was employed by the Dodge Coutny Assistance Office as Chief Clerk from February, 1946 to July, 1948. From then until 1960 she was a stay at home mom until her love of Art took over. Jean was instrumental in forming the Fremont Area Art Association serving as president from 1961 to 1967. She became co-chairperson in 1979 of the purchase and remodeling of the Associations home at 92 West 6th and recieved a Distinguished Service Award for serving as the Publicity/Exibits Chairman until 1986. In 1968 she was asked to serve as Artist in Residence at Midland and she remained affiliated with Midland's Art Department until her illness in 2002. She was extremely proud of the Honorary Bachelor of Arts Degree she recieved from Midland in 1988. Her art won many State and National Awards and has been exhibited in 20 states and Washington, D.C. Her Art is part of many private and corporate collections and is exhibited at the Museum of Nebraska Art, Midland Lutheran College, Nebraska Wesleyan University, Wicks Alumni Center at UNL, Wayne State College, Peru State College, and the John G. Neihart Museum. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, a 50 year member of Arbor Vita Chapter 92 Order of Eastern Star, and the National Pen Women. She never neglected her family, serving as a Den Mother in Cub Scouts, and active in PTA and Swim Team. She supported her boys through their education including their Music Group as they traveled over four states. Her home was always a gathering point for young people while she also supported Marvin in his career. Survived by her husband Marvin, two sons Robert L. (Bob) Welstead (wife Tess) of Elkhorn, Nebraska; Dr. Jon A. Welstead (wife Karin) of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin. Three grandchildren, Katie Adams (husband Mike, Jason Welstead, and Karlan Welstead and Great Grandchild Josh Lisko. Special Friends Jean and Ernie Nick, Jan and Bob Therien, and her friends at Edgewood Vista. Services will be Monday at 11:00 A.M. at Dugan Funeral Chapel. Rev. Gregg Hall officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M..
