The funeral for Jens Richard Jensen, 84, of Fremont will be 10:00 am Thursday August 16, 2006 at Evangelical Free Church, in Fremont. Jens Richard Jensen was born June 3, 1923, in Klarup, Denmark, where he was raised and completed his high school education and played professional soccer. He then attended a two year trade school to become a certified dairy man and worked as a dairy man in Denmark until immigrating to the United States. In Denmark he was part of the Royal King's guards until WWII started. On Jan 24, 1948 he, his wife and daughter left Denmark aboard the Drottningholm Ocean Liner, arriving at the port of New York City Feb. 11, 1948. This crossing was documented as being the most severe passage in 28 years of sailing. He became a United States citizen Aug. 18, 1953. He first moved to Superior, NE to work for Farmers Union Co-op Creamery, until 1950, and then transferred to Fremont to help manage the Farmers Union Co-op Creamery here. After the Co-op Creamery closed in Fremont in the mid 1960's he then went to work as a manager for Hillside Dairy in Uehling, NE until 1973. In 1973 he was employed for Fremont Public Schools as a custodian. His first year was at Fremont Senior High, then transferred to Grant Elementary and later added Howard Elementary. He loved his job because of the children. The last few years at the schools, he only worked part time and finally retired in 2002 after 29 years. He married Anita E Herlyck on April 18, 1946, in Alborg, Denmark at the Vor Frelser Kirke. After 57 years of marriage, she passed away April 24, 2003. Survivors include: a daughter Verna (Mrs. Russell) Homa of Fremont; two granddaughters, Brenda Weinandt of Fremont, and Gina (Mrs. Tom) Vogt of Arlington; and three great-grandchildren, Christian Vogt, Courtney Weinandt and Jordan Weinandt, a sister Paula (Mrs. Kalle) Seicht, Denmark. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents, a sister and a brother. The Rev. Rob Spykstra will officiate Thursday's memorial service. There will be no visitation. Memorials can be made to the Alzheimer's Association and the Parkinson's Foundation
