L. P. "Pete" Mitchell, 85, died Thursday afternoon at Arbor Manor Living Center. L.P. (Pete) Mitchell was born July 28, 1920 in Sutton, Nebraska. His parents were Smith and Ada Mitchell. He graduated from Sutton High School in 1937, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Doane College, 1949 and a Master of Science degree from the University of Omaha, 1958. He married Maxine MacDonald on May 28, 1950 in Sutton. They have one son, Jay Scott Mitchell of Norfolk, Virginia. Immediately after graduating from high school, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, and later worked at the Martin Bomber Plant in Bellevue. In 1941 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served four years during WWII as an airplane mechanic. He served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Sangamon in the South Pacific in combat near Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Guadalcanal, Guam, New Caledonia, the Marshall Islands, the Philippines and others until his carrier was crippled by a kamikaze attack on May 4, 1945. He taught at Chester High School, Chester, Nebraska from 1949 to 1953, and at Fremont High School from 1953 to 1966 during which time he set up their guidance program and served many years as chairman of the American Field Service. From 1966 on he taught sociology at Midland Lutheran College, later becoming Registrar there, retiring in 1985. He also taught at Creighton University for several summers. During his retirement years he was active in the arts community, having had showings of his whimsical sculpture locally and statewide. He was a member of the Fremont Area Art Association, serving on its board for several years. He also was chairman of the American Crafts Council, North Central Region, 1973, 1974. He is survived by his wife, Maxine, son Jay, brother Carroll Mitchell and wife Dyllis of Lincoln, sister-in-law Thelma Mitchell of Garner, Iowa, brother-in-law W.V. (Bud) Markin of Lincoln, nieces and nephews. Burial will be in the Sutton, NE, Cemetery. Memorials can be given to Midland Lutheran College or the Fremont Area Art Association. Funeral Services Monday, May 1 at 10:00 AM at Lattin-Dugan-Chambers Chapel. Visitation Sunday, April 30 from 3:00 to 8:00 with family present from 4 pm to 6 pm.
