Pauline L. Updike, age 96, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2015, at Fremont Health Medical Center
Pauline was born July 4, 1918, to Leo and Lil Hayes in rural Burt County.She attended and graduated Lyons High School.Pauline married Melvin Updike on April 11, 1940, in Sioux City, Iowa.They lived in Lyons for a short time and after living in California for a few years they moved to Fremont in the mid '40's and she operated a daycare through the 1950's.She then began working as an LPN for the hospital until working with podiatrist Dr. Svoboda.After many years she retired to travel with her husband Melvin and take care of her four granddaughters.
Pauline enjoyed cooking for many people, playing cards, sewing, attending country music festivals, and traveling in the family motor home.Pauline especially loved spending time with her brothers and sisters and the affection she received from her many nieces and nephews.She also had a special group of lifetime friends who would go shopping, drinking coffee, and playing lots of cards.
After 53 years of marriage with Melvin, Pauline was lucky enough to have a special companion Elmer Engelbart.
For the last 5 years Pauline lived at Pathfinder Place where she felt at home and considered many there to be like her family.
