Russell Homa, 79

Entered into rest at Fremont Area Medical Center Friday morning August 16.

He was born in Carnegie, Pennsylvania January 7, 1934 where he was raised and graduated from Carnegie High School in 1953. He served in the Army in Korea from 1954 to 1956 and then attended Pratt Junior College in Pratt, Kansas and Graduated from University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. Russell married Carol Woods February 8, 1958 in Pratt, Kansas. He received a Masters in Education from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and then began teaching at Fremont High School in 1962. He taught Social Studies, U.S. History, coached wrestling, tennis, and cross country during his 34 year tenure before his retirement in 1996. Russell enjoyed his summer house painting work and his Thursday night poker games with his fellow teachers.

Russell married Verna Jensen LaRocca in Omaha June 17, 2001.

He was a member of the American Legion, Nebraska Retired Teachers Association, and the Evangelical Free Church. He was a three time member of Fremont High School Hall of Fame. In Russ's 34 years of teaching and coaching he touched thousands of lives and left an impression on many of them. He was a kind, loving, compassionate husband and wonderful grandfather and great grandfather. Family meant everything to him. Russ will be missed more than words can express.

He is survived by his wife, Verna; Their children, Denise Sharp (husband Les) of Erie, Colorado; Michelle Peterson (husband Michael) of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Michael Homa (wife Shelley) of Omaha; David Homa (wife Mary) of San Jose, California; Brenda Ballou (husband Todd) of Bellevue; and Gina Vogt (husband Tom) of Arlington; 3 sisters Millie Nixon of Carnegie, Pennsylvania; Helen Kleer of Heidelberg, Pennsylvania and Johanna Puleo of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandsons. He was preceded by his parents and nine brothers and sisters.

Funeral Services will be Wednesday August 21 at 11:00 A.M. at the Evangelical Free Church. Rev. Ty Schenzel officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 3:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Dugan Funeral Chapel with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery with graveside rites by American Legion Post 20 and VFW Post 854 Honor Guard.
