Thomas G. Erickson, M.D., 70, of Boise, Idaho, formerly of Fremont, died of pancreatic cancer on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, at home with his family. Thomas George Erickson was born at home on Aug. 24, 1938, in Broken Bow. His mother, Minerva D. (Worthman) Erickson, delivered with the assistance of his father George T. Erickson, M.D., and grandfather, E. H. Worthman, M.D. His early education years were spent in Broken Bow where he graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1956 after having participated in band, choir and football. He began competitive trapshooting in high school and after competing in the Grand American Trap Shoot in Vandalia, Ohio, he was named to the Junior All America Trap Team. In the fall of 1956, he entered college at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and pledged Kappa Sigma fraternity. In 1959, he entered medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center where he became a member of Phi Rho Sigma medical fraternity. He met his wife, Marcia Elliott of Fremont, during this period and they were married shortly after his graduation on June 15, 1963. He began a rotating internship at Bishop Clarkson Memorial Hospital in Omaha. Upon completion of this internship a year later, he was inducted into the United States Navy and stationed at the Naval Air Station in Memphis, Tenn., where he served in the Medical Corp. During his two years of active service he volunteered to be assigned to a spy ship, the USS Liberty. Its cruise began in Norfolk, Va., then on to the Canary Islands and down the west coast of Africa to Capetown, with many ports of call in between. He was honorably discharged on March 29, 1971, with the rank of Lt. Commander. In 1966, he began a residency in general surgery at the University of Missouri Medical Center. In 1969, daughter Jody arrived. Upon completion of his residency in 1970, the young family moved to Fremont where Tom began the private practice of general surgery. In 1972, son Jason arrived. The practice evolved into a multi-specialty clinic with medical, surgical, ob-gyn and pediatric divisions. He was a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a fellow in the American College of Surgeons. The opportunity for a career change came in October 1987 when he became medical director of the Fremont Area Medical Center's Emergency Medicine Department, further developing and expanding that service until his retirement in the spring of 1998. Upon retirement Tom and Marcia began spending the summers at their cabin on Goose Creek, near New Meadows, Idaho. The next years were filled with travel, dining with friends, Big Red football and time with his family. Six years later they moved to Boise and became full time Idaho residents. He loved the beauty of Idaho and its people. His family and friends will miss his sharp wit and unique Nebraska Sandhills humor and anecdotes. Survivors include: his wife, Marcia; a daughter, Jody Erickson and granddaughter, Madilyn; a son, Jason Erickson and his significant other, Sheri, her daughter Chloe and son Gareth, all of the Boise area; a sister, Barbara (Mrs. John) Gibbons of Comstock; a brother, Edward Erickson of Kino Bay, Mexico; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Walla of Fremont; eight nieces and a nephew.
