Thomas J. Milliken, 90
of Fremont

Tom died Saturday, October 20 at Nye Legacy in Fremont.He was born March 23, 1928 in Fremont to James Dale and Marion Kastle Milliken and was the younger brother of James D. Milliken, Jr.

Tom went to public schools in Fremont, and was an outstanding athlete.He was an all-state basketball player, an all-conference football player, and a high jump champion in track.He earned degrees in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska and from the program in banking at the University of Wisconsin.He was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at NU.

Soon after college he met Nancy J. Moore of Omaha, also a recent graduate of the University of Nebraska, and they were married. They settled in Fremont where Tom worked at the Fremont National Bank.He later became president and chairman of the board of directors, and many years later, he oversaw the sale of the bank to First National Bank of Omaha.

Tom and Nancy had three children: Thomas J. Milliken, Jr., James B. Milliken (wife Nana Smith) of Austin, Texas, and Anne Kastle Milliken Shiff (husband Mike), of Plano, Texas. and his five grandchildren Bennett, Caleb and Anna Milliken and Sam and Sophie Shiff.He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jim, his wife Nancy and son Tommy.He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Tom was a business and civic leader in Fremont and Nebraska, serving as president, chairman, and member of many local and state organizations, including Midland College, the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, the Fremont YMCA, Fremont Rotary, the Nebraska Bankers Association, the Young Presidents Organization, the University of Nebraska Foundation, the Nature Conservancy, and the Nebraska Arts Council.

He was an active outdoorsman, sports fan, waterfowl hunter and golfer, passions he shared with his father and passed on to his son and grandsons. He was an avid reader, accomplished cook, and music lover.He and Nancy enjoyed their many good friends in Fremont and across the country, and they loved to travel with friends around the country and the world.
